Where parts of the front passed through chalk, here you absolutely get ‘trench art’ – chalk is easy and silent to carve so can be done while sitting in a trench. The image here shows the levels that such artwork got to, carved into the side of a trench ay Aveluy by French soldiers. On the right are items carved by a soldier in the Leicester Yeomanry while he was at Hulluch, near Loos.
