DECORATED SHELL CASES

This is the best of the standard shell decoration techniques. It consists of a decoration design which is raised, either by raising the design out from the normal level of the shell or, more usually, pushing back the non-design areas to leave the design proud of the background. The latter method is characterised by the ‘stippled’ background, covered in punch marks, leaving the design smooth and about 2 or 3 mm proud of the background.
