A more occasional use of the brass from shell cases is to cut it from the solid base and flatten it out to form a two dimensional canvas for a piece of artwork.
With etching and some shallow embossing these plaques are purely decorative, designed to hang on the wall.

ETCHED PLATES / PLAQUES

Example made into a plate and then profusely etched. The central motif is the wings of the Royal Flying Corps and the crest of the Royal Army Medical Corps. There is a list of actions in the centre and round the rim is an exhaustive list of places across Belgium, France and England, including HMT (His Majesty’s Troopship) Bellrophon, which is presumably how he travelled to France.
