Decorated Shell Casings - Applique

Applique work is where additional objects/metal work is attached to an existing shell. This could be as simple as attaching cap badges and bullets to a shell case, but above we have flowers in copper and steel. The large shell in the centre has a spiral of flowers and branches made from melted down shrapnel balls. This was probably made by a renowned Belgian craftsman, Richard Dezziter, shown on the right, who was based in Ypres in the 1920s and 30s.
